Mini Vacations: Energy For Your Life and Work
By Mary Jacques Five Rivers Lodge Dillion, MT
One day in early May, Jay Burgin, my husband took a mini vacation flyfishing in the late afternoon. The Yellow-headed Blackbirds he watched in the willows along the stream captivated him. Jay's powerful story of his surprise encounter gave me hope of seeing the Yellow-headed Blackbirds this year. Several days later, on a rainy road trip in the mountains through The Big Hole Valley, I spotted that vivid splash of yellow gold and velvet black in the green and gold willows next to the road. A couple of days later our dog, Kaiote, and I took a late Sunday afternoon walk to the wildlife habitat along the lodge stream. The Red-winged Blackbirds are prolific in that habitat. In the cattails and willows they had made room for single Yellow-headed Blackbird. My excitement and energy level soared. I had new ideas and direction for a project in which I felt stuck. These unexpected, uplifting experiences occurred when Jay and I were on work-related mini-vacations. We own and manage Five Rivers lodge so we can't easily get away together for these mini-vacations. However, we know that these brief hours and occasional overnights are terribly important for the health and well-being of ourselves, our relationship, and our business.
