Portage Gives Unexpected Passage For Travelers
By Mary Jacques Five Rivers Lodge Dillion, MT
Portage. The idea has intrigued me for the nineteen years that the Rocky mountain region has been an integral part of my life. Two of Webster's definitions of portage are: "The act of carrying or transporting; the carrying of boats or goods overland from one navigable water to another." When western waters became impassable, explorers and pioneers carried canoes, boats, and supplies on their backs. Lewis and Clark, and other highly motivated people, explored, charted, and settled the Rocky Mountains by taking the risks, by enduring the pain, and by giving thanks for the joys that went with portage. Today we continue to use portage to open passage ways in our environment and in ourselves. The courage and openness that portage takes is a way of life for some of us. For others of us, brief encounters are all we can handle. This past spring we built an addition to our lodge. Material were on back order and we were running short on time to complete the work. At the beginning of summer I traveled from Montana to Logan, Utah for windows for our new dining room.
